Proposition 8 passes

"Eight years ago, Californians voted 61% to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman."

As of right now (12:45am Pacific Time), it seems like 52% of Californians are voting to retain that definition.

Without a doubt, the vote on proposition 8 tonight was a victory for bigots. They've won. Today.

But still. From 61% to 52%. In eight years. That's stunning.

The speed of changing opinion on equal marriage rights is awesome, and though slower than we'd like, it's in the right direction.

They've won. Today. But Massachusetts isn't going away. Neither is Connecticut. And New Jersey will probably be next, and New York. And they won't be the last. And the skies will continue to fail to fall in those states, because there is nothing the least bit harmful about recognizing families as families. And I predict that in less than a decade, we'll take back California too.

They've won. Today. But we have two states with same-sex marriage, when very recently we had none. Civil unions, which seemed like a far-out radical idea so recently, is now the moderate position.

They've won. Today. But they're losing the war, and they know it. It's only a matter of time.

Well said, Barry. And just what Ivy needs to hear. She worked hard to defeat 8 and was heartbroken last night about the result.

Oh, Barry. I know you are right and I guess I should be happy. Right now, I am heartbroken.

The only thing that keeps me going is that this is completely unconstitutional so I really don't think it can stand.

I just don't get it. I thought we were smarter than that.

Thank you for reminding me of the progress we've made.

There may be the possibility that Prop 8 could be overturned on legal reasons. I'm not a lawyer, so I can't say for certain, but I'm really hoping that this will happen.

I was so proud of my state when same-sex marriages were legalized back in May, so the results of this election are very disheartening.

I know we'll get there eventually... I just wish it would have been now.

(Cross-posted 'cause everyone's talking about it)

...Can't they see that gay marriage doesn't in any way impact straight marriage? The most fundamentalist religious person loses nothing by supporting same-sex marriage. Canadian law clearly deliniates the rights of churches to perform the kind of marriages they so choose and the rights of gay people to get married in every sense before the law (not just some weird civil union thingy). Surely the high and mighty American Constitution can do the same. Or else it's not so high and mighty.
