Buying a new desktop
I'm thinking of buying a new desktop -- one that hopefully won't choke on huge photoshop files with dozens of layers. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

(From a budget point of view, I might have to stick with Windows, even though I know everyone loves Mac.)

Barry

I would get your specs (what does CS 3/4 require as far as memory) and then go to the OfficeDespot or TigerDirect and select a box that meets your needs. Assuming you're reasonably hardware savvy you can make sure you have the slots for memory and just buy the off the floor model. I'm assuming you have monitor you are going to use from the old computer. I figure that computers have become fairly comoditized. I got a deal on a reconditioned Gateway Media PC that had the configuration I was looking for (to run CS 3 reasonably well) and a flat screen at TigerDirect a year and half ago. Now I feel confident in mucking around the insides of my computer. My use of CS runs toward photos, with the occasional make it yourself game (InDesign here we come). For specs of a reasonable box in the days market I go to http://arstechnica.com/guides.ars . Check out the September 2008 Budget Box. They also spec out a ultrabudget box, but I wouldn't think this reasonable for a graphic intensive application. The ARS crowd is gamer heavy.

No, don't go with Tiger Direct. One thing tiger direct frequently does is buy PCs which HP, Dell, or another major brand made for use in another country. The problem with this is the warranties are only valid in the countries they were made for- you cannot get tech support or parts replacement in the US with some of them.

As said I am my own tech support. Now I did go to a TigerDirect store, not shopping online. I could see what I was getting and read about the warranty right there. My real point is to go to a big box and buy a standard recognizable name computer that meets your needs. I would avoid Best Buy and Circuit City (unless its one of the ones closing and you can get a clearance price), just on general principles.

Honestly, Barry, you'll probably get a computer that better meets your needs/more for your money if you do a custom configuration. The big guys like HP & Dell do configured to order systems. You just have to know what you want. If you want me to sit down and go over specs with you at some point, I could probably come up with something you'd really love.
